Is it just me or is October filled on National Days? Today is Digital Workplace Day! For so many of us, especially since the pandemic, a digital workplace is nothing new. I’m lucky in that the pandemic did not affect my work situation since I already worked remotely. But I know many friends who had to make the switch who otherwise enjoyed working from the office.
On my LinkedIn Story (yes, I’m doing LinkedIn Stories), I shared a snapshot of my workplace. It’s not glamourous. I don’t have a fancy home office or multiple monitors. I have my laptop and the kitchen table. That’s right, the kitchen table.
This is no ordinary kitchen table. It’s a kitchen table that also belongs to a toddler (and occasional cake). That means crumbs, crafts, miscellaneous household objects he likes to use a toys (the filter cleaning brush), and my desperate attempt at organization (see wire basket).
My heart goes out to parents who had to transition to working from home. Without a child care or child watch option it’s really hard to get work done from home – especially if it’s little kids running around the house. Sometimes you’ll see me researching an article or busting out a quick paragraph in between watching my son eat breakfast next to me. Or I crack the door to the deck and watch him play outside with one eye while I reply to an email with another. (Where is my robot nanny?)

Luckily, if you’re embracing the #digitalworkplace, you’re in luck. According to Futurist Cathy Hackl, the jobs of the future are only getting more digital. In her list of seven LinkedIn job ads of the future, we can see that working through digital means is only the beginning of what our careers have in store. Augmented Reality Life Designer, Virtual Couture Designer, and Hologram Stylist are only the beginning of what is to come.
