I am getting ready for a move which means it’s time to clean out my closet, toss out clothes that no longer bring me joy, and purge my bookshelf. Yes, that task is the hardest of all.
How do I let go of books?
Books are the best. Seeing them on my shelf makes me feel smarter (even if I never read them 🤫). Alas, they say if you haven’t worn something in the past year or read something since your last move, you should get rid of it. For me, that means a few books.
Each book tells a tale. Some I’ve been holding on to read for so long that they are no longer relevant, aka ‘Wikinomics’. That one probably reads more like a history book at this point.
What we can learn from business books

‘Tweet Naked’ and ‘Social Media Optimization for Dummies’ are from my Doghead Simulations days. That was before we brought a CMO on board and I was trying to play Social Media Manager.
‘PMI-PBA Certification’ is when I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I thought I’d get another certification. I never made it through the whole book or attempted the exam. Just goes to show that I am not one of those people who can take exams just for fun.
‘The Long Tail’ is the oldest business book I own that I never read. I bought it Senior year of college at the recommendation from a college professor (I think).
‘Hooked’ and ‘Platform’ were impulse buys. They sounded like interesting topics but didn’t “hook” me.
Over time the reason why we bought a business book may no longer be valid. The book may be out of date, which could make it for interesting reading from a historical perspective. Mostly, we gain experience and confidence over the years that a book can’t give us.
Are there any books on your reading list? Let me know in the comments!
